My pantry is a museum of glass jars. Some of my favorite jars are the Oui yogurt lil guys. Not sure if they still do this, but for a bit the company was making pretty jars with floral motifs. I found a wood turner on Etsy who makes beautiful lids specifically for those jars. Oh, and dissolve able labels changed my life.
Excellent post full of a lot of practical tips! We bought glass storage containers with wood lids but often our jars are just better - they take up less space, are great for liquids like soup, for freezing as you mentioned. We find ourselves replacing lids after they’ve been cleaned a few times. They don’t last as long as the glass and I’m concerned about the soft plastic on the inside of the cap, especially as it gets older and frays.
We have so many jars that when we buy new products, we recycle the glass and keep the lid. We have canning cars and metal lids and those work until they rust.
Any tips for getting out the smell/taste of what was in there before? For example, even after I was a jar that has had pickles or olives in it, it still smells like pickles or olives
Usually the smell is lingering in the lid! Many jars have universal threads and dimensions so you might be able to swap in a lid from a different jar. Otherwise use those jars for things like salad dressing where the lingering strong scent isn’t an issue. But I hear you! Garlic is the worst offender.
